MAKE MONEY WHILE WORKING FROM HOME | By now, it is no longer news that state governments in Nigeria have asked workers in non-essential industries to work from home. (Essential industries include food, pharmaceuticals and healthcare.) Image
So, how are individuals in non-essential businesses supposed to earn money during the shut-down? Here are a few ideas:
1. Digitise your business fast: If you haven’t already done so, immediately set up a video strategy session with your team. Brainstorm aspects of your business that can be delivered online. Tip: Services are more easily digitised than products.
What part of your business can become a service? Don't assume #COVID19 will just go away. What about the long-term impact on the economy and our current global recession? Prepare now and stop waiting.
Set up the tools you need to implement – Zoom to interface with clients via video, Wave for online invoicing, Hello Sign for digital contracts, Paystack or Flutterwave for payments collections.
Also remember, delivery services for essential items are still operational. Carry your ID card. You may however focus on selling to your immediate neighbourhood, if movement is limited.
2. Meet new needs: Now that people are at home, what can you help them do? What do they need? Can you provide it? In addition, brainstorm ways to help your clients move their own businesses online and then, charge for the service.
3. Look for freelance jobs you can do from home: Now’s the time to set up a profile on freelance work sites. Customer service functions are so backlogged, that companies are looking for remote help for service issues.
Also clean up your LinkedIn and other social media handles. Then, start putting samples of your work online and state you are available to take briefs.
4. Learn new skills: Remember that course you’ve been meaning to take? Now’s your chance. Register for free online courses and set aside 2 hours each day for virtual learning.
You may not monetize the skills immediately, but you’ll be ready to charge a premium when the economy rebounds and companies start looking for solutions providers.
5. Stockpile for the future: If you run a business where you can still produce in a controlled or very remote site, consider stockpiling for future sales.
6. Invest excess cash: If you’re lucky and your source of income has not yet been affected, set aside what you’re saving from transport or eating lunch outside and invest the extra cash.
By the time work resumes, you would have built up some significant investments. But, diversify your investments and save in Dollars.
7. Diversify your investments: The global economy is currently in turmoil and our Naira has lost some of its market value. So, now’s the time to learn about investments in alternate currencies.
It’s also time to invest in stocks of essential businesses that are still growing and making money during the COVID-19 pandemic. My investment course can help you learn about diversified investment options - subomiplumptre.com/courses
