He spent his life as a first responder when others needed him. When he had a heart attack on the job, system overwhelm meant no resources available for him.
This is betrayal.
We’ve been asking, pleading, negotiating, screaming for this not to happen.
In March 2020 I thought long & hard about a #NYC CMO offer as #pandemic rose. “We need you” appealed to my sense of mission. My prior attempts at heroism had beaten me into pragmatic reality. I assessed risk of #moralinjury like @drbreenheroes. I declined
Also, for years I have pushed past & persevered thru my getting sick easier, staying sick longer, prone to syncope. There’s never been any compassion for #HCW tho. Be cog in system.
Was unsure what exposure to #COVID19 would do to my ability to function at needed heroic levels.
My late mother supported me, when I turned down the job, in overcoming the shame we heap on ourselves when we “fail” to be superhuman as #HCW/doctors to compensate for the system’s failures. I think my awareness of my risks/health realities saved my life. khn.org/news/article/u…
The #COVID19#pandemic took my mother, who lived in #Texas and who did not yet have vaccine available in her zip code. I have never used “doctor privilege” to cut in line or gain extra access. Mom raised me to be fair, humble. She had mobility limitations.
Race is used as the criterion to determine you did something wrong. It is not “#ImposterSyndrome” we are feeling but a real, constant danger if we do not live up to an impossible of perfectionism there will be draconian consequences.
This has hit communities of color & the #HCW of those communities the hardest. It is literally our own relatives & neighbors dying. Hit on all sides. Black & minoritized doctors more likely to work in the community, at margins, with refugees, or #FQHC.
Mike Hart, first responder who died while no resources available to him, mentioned in 1st tweet, was also at higher risk of #COVID19. As it is, EMS already go into unknown situations & danger. This was an added risk.
Yes, there is higher #vaccine hesitancy among EMS #HCW so that may contribute to higher risk - exposure via peers as well as the general public or face to face life saving procedures. Many lost faith in the system after 9/11 & affects on their health.
This is NOT “chickens coming home to roost” though cuz those dying are NOT the ones sabotaging & slashing #publichealth or harassing & mislabeling #HCW or telling 9/11 frontline they were “crazy.”
It is the powerless, frontline, at margins who have died, including on the job.

Take #sharethemic initiative. It allowed #Blackexcellence to speak thru #influencer accounts to large followings for a day. I looked at before/after numbers, it did NOT drive any additional traffic to the actual accounts of those voices. Resurfacing this:
This is NOT the standard:
-keep your access/proximity to power via a politician
-stay in spotlight
-use your credentials (& frowns/soothing tone) to gaslight a nation that deaths occurring not a concern to you

Those of us with immigrant backgrounds have NO idea what debt we owe these women for risking their lives so some of us can shop at Whole Foods with other suburban moms, then drive a Lexus home to ride on a Peloton, & think only our own hard work created this access to success.
In comparison, the black woman doesn’t have that opportunity to be paraded around as the most recent woman “saved” & celebrated - the tropes are universally harmful & exploitative/pejorative vs Black women in society/media + centuries of economic barriers/being exploited.
When I see this, and think of how a Muslim woman was denied a soda can given other passengers on the flight, out of fear of her look & belief she would harm people…

This is a really fascinating case as a lot of what I see happening in #MedTwitter (Twitter presence of the legal minefield that is #healthcare#MedEd, etc):
