Heartbreaking #thread.
I just gave birth to my second child & a sense of safety was a key part of healthy & positive outcomes for me & baby.
It seriously makes my heart ache to think of women afraid, feeling like unassisted birth is their best option. They deserve better.
It's policy to evac pregnant women from my community to birth in the city, which is problematic in many ways...
...and when I asked a health professional in my community what would happen if I refused to leave and came to the hospital in labour...
...I was told they wouldn't refuse me care, but WOULD call CFS to alert them to my negligence in not leaving to birth in the city.
Threats like that should not be acceptable. Coercion, threats, sowing fear, and destruction of families should not be commonplace.
After all the genocidal shit our people have been through, our women...who are doing the sacred work of birthing nations...deserve safety.
They deserve respect, support, love, trust. They do not deserve to be terrorized simply for being #Indigenous.
