In a new piece for Prospect, a VERY senior EU legal expert says

- Article 50 can be reversed, but not extended
- If Britain reverses A50 it can keep its current opt-outs
- It is impossible to extend the transition
- Talks will probably soon collapse!

Really @chennaicorp ! This is the access to Nehru Park Chennai Metro station? At points the pavement itself is non existent with bus and Poonamallee High Rd traffic whizzing by. Senior citizen required support on both sides with parking 50 m away. @cmrlofficial @DisabilityIndia

The most striking assertion is that @MichelBarnier and @campaignforleo are seeking to exploit threats from diehard Republican groups in NI to bend UK to EU's will and that "renegade Republican groups have been effectively recruited as the armed wing of the European Union". 2
This claim is both bizarre and truly offensive. The EU and successive governments in Dublin have worked ceaselessly with all parties in NI to bring violence to an end. To suggest now the emergence of an unholy alliance between Dublin/Brussels and NI Rep groups is grotesque. 3

Today, @CER_EU publishes my piece on #Brexit and #JHA. I have been looking at this for 1,5 years so I hope I did not make too many mistakes (links to piece - cer.eu/publications/a… and opens thread)
At the outset of the #Brexit process, most people assumed that a deal on #police and #judicial co-operation was easier to get than one on #trade. Time has shown this is not the case. Ongoing co-op on #JHA is one of the few items yet to be agreed on #withdrawal deal. Why?
Well, because the #EU and #UK's opening positions in the #negotiation are incompatible: Britain wants a #bespoke agreement with the EU, a la #Schengen, but is not willing to accept #ECJ or #EUCharter. EU wants to replicate existing models. What to do?

Come on UK, I love you and respect you, but also be aware,

there’s nothing special about you as a country that means you deserve ‘special treatment’ from EU.
In the past the U.K. has had the fortune of having had clever diplomats that have secured some opt outs and special consideration. But make no mistake, when UK eventually joined the EU, we in the rest of Europe were mainly feeling sorry for you and yes we owed you a WWII favour
Since then you have done your usual thing of being the loudest in the room. You’re like the slightly embarrassing uncle at the wedding with a few good jokes. We’ve listened to you and laughed to be polite. We’ve given you the best seat at the table, but it’s never enough is it?

Brexit transition: on Monday 29th Jan, EU27 shd agree transition guidelines so talks on transition can start with the UK. Broad agreement exists that transition will be under all existing EU rules and laws. But this leaves plenty of difficult issues. Thread 1/10
First, how long will transition be? The Commission has suggested end 2020 – also the end of EU financial framework. UK can ask for longer but then it will have to pay more (which UK knows) & EU will argue UK no longer benefits from its current rebate in calculating how much 2/10
Could transition be extended? EU seem to think it could be extended by 1-2 years without hitting the legal problem that A50 can’t be used to agree a long term trade deal. Will this be clearly set out in the deal? May not be. 3/10
