2/ Let's review how our major institutions utterly failed to recognize and fight disinformation and propaganda in in 2016: 
3/ Disinformation has always existed, but it is *the* critical feature of the Trump era. We can't track and expose it using the same journalistic methods of previous eras, where media and political and tech reporting are separate silos.
4/ So we want to hire a crack investigative journalist and a data scientist to track propaganda through the thickets of social media, and report on what platforms and regulators are doing or not doing about it.
5/ If there is one area to get more talent on right now, before the midterms, it is this one. So yeah, this is a fundraising pitch. But it's more than that.
6/ Because when we've asked readers to step up on special projects, they always have. All the way back to when twitter users offered @MacMcClelland a boat during the BP oil spill.
7/ Through various crisis both widely recognized and not yet recognized (like when we started a mass shooting project in 2012: motherjones.com/politics/2012/…) you guys have stepped up.
