As an American living abroad, I fear that Americans in the US—particularly those who don’t travel internationally much—may not fully realize how much damage has been done to global perceptions of the United States as a result of Trump. It has been devastating to watch firsthand.
Our allies no longer trust us. Developing nations no longer see us as a model. And authoritarian thugs see an ally rather than a foe in the White House. Confidence in US leadership from Obama to Trump is down

Germany: 70%
Canada: 61%
UK: 57%
Japan: 54%

Here are 4 charts from Pew, one of the gold standard groups for international attitude surveys, showing the damage to America’s reputation from Trump. The Iraq war also devastated perceptions of America abroad; Trump has done the same during a time of relative peace & prosperity.

This coup (or coup attempt, depending on how it shakes out) continues to affirm one of the most clear-cut lessons for dictators who want to stay in power: never get sick and never leave the country. Bongo is recovering from a stroke in Morocco.
There are at least 80 US troops who were just deployed to Gabon; Trump sent a letter to Congress on Friday informing them of the deployment to help with the DRC, which is facing a lot of volatility around elections. Gabon is an oil-rich country in West Central Africa.

...Wow it didn’t fit in one tweet. Or when he admitted to Lester Holt that he obstructed justice in firing Comey? Or when he apparently dictated a false statement to obscure attempted collusion with Russia at Trump Tower? Or when his (oh goodness I’m going to need a third tweet)
Or when his campaign chairman pleaded guilty to conspiracy against the US? And when his deputy campaign chairman, national security adviser, foreign policy adviser, and personal lawyer all became convicted felons? Because I remember. And the president shouldn’t be above the law.

2018 is slated to be about a 7.2% popular vote margin of victory for Democrats. For comparison:

1994: R+7.1%
2006: D+8.0%
2008: D+10.6%
2010: R+7.2%
2014: R+5.7%

Anyone debate that 1994 or 2010 was a wave? Same margin. Gerrymandering is the main difference. Via @SamWangPhD
The narrative that this was some disappointing night for Democrats is historically illiterate. Democrats made huge gains. The full impact of Democratic gains was slightly muted by gerrymandering (House) and an absurdly unfavorable & nearly unprecedented Senate map. Still a wave.
As @SamWangPhD & others have shown, gerrymandering got much worse after the 2010 redistricting, resulting in some of the most skewed maps in modern history. This has caused people to wrongly look exclusively at seat numbers, when the raw vote totals are telling us something major

There's been so much hype about #Zanzibar, but at the same time, a few people weren't particularly thrilled. Had to go find out for myself ,so some friends and I planned a trip. What I think? Top rating for beaches, good food, so much to see, history. Read this thread... #Travel
From #DaresSalaam, you have the options of flying or going by ferry to #Zanzibar. On the other hand, you could fly directly there. We spent a few days in Dar, then we went by ferry...it cost $35 per person for economy and $50 per person for VIP. We travelled in the VIP section.
It takes 1hr30mins to get to Zanzibar by ferry. It could take longer when it's turbulent. The hotel we stayed in was an hour away from stone town. We stayed in Nungwi which is North of Zanzibar. #Travel #Africa #Tanzania #holidays

THREAD: Some notes and thoughts from reading "Fear" yesterday. Firstly, as @HeathaT points out, it pays to collaborate on these projects: Bannon, Porter and Cohn seem major sources and all come off pretty well.
Some anecdotes: When Bannon was first asked to chat to Trump about a presidential run in 2010, he replied: "I don't have time for fucking nonsense...this guy's not serious.
In the subsequent meeting, Trump is told it's a problem that history shows him to be "very pro-choice."
Trump's response: "What does that mean?"
He is told what pro-choice means.
"That can be fixed," he says. "You just tell me how to fix that. I'm—what do you call it? Pro-life."
