COVID toes are thought to be a known, albeit formerly rare, condition called chilblains (also known as pernio). This used to be the bane of people living in cold damp climates (think British boarding schools, or New England). #COVIDtoes 2/
Chilblains is characterized by inflammatory skin lesions in patients exposed to non-freezing weather during late winter or early spring. These lesions typically present as painful erythrocyanotic (red-blue) discoloration, often with dead skin, on the toes, fingers, or both. 3/

We produce interferons in response to infections. These interferons “interfere” with viral replication. Coronaviruses have some protection against this because they have a replication checking enzyme (this is why coronaviruses mutate more slowly than some other viruses like flu)
Interferon is also used as an anti-viral agent (used to be a treatment for HIV and Hep C)

It is an enormous pleasure to be part of this #paper: #COVID-PIEL, the Spanish muticentric study of the #cutaneous manifestation of #COVID19 has just been published in the prestigious journal British Journal of Dermatology! 375 patients included! Conclusions here 👇 (#thread)
A new classification of #skin manifestations of #COVID19 is proposed: 1. Acral areas of erythema-oedema with some vesicles or pustules (19%); 2. Other vesicular eruptions (9%); 3 Urticarial lesions (19%); 4. Other maculopapules (47%) and 5. Livedo or necrosis (6%)
1⃣ Acral lesions, #COVIDtoes, pseudo-chiblains..., affected young patients and lasted a mean of 12,7 days to appear in the course of COVID. They were associated with less severe disease. Itchy (30%) or painful (32%).
