[1/9] Ahead of #COP26, these @royalsociety policy briefs lay out 12 science & technology areas key for enabling #netzero.
Inadvertently the briefs also lay out clear lack of representation in #STEM and #academia
Reduced inequalities is part of netzero solution #SDG10
👇🏾Thread👇🏾
[2/9]
✅120+ authors from 30+ countries were included in these briefs, plus another ~40 reviewers. Impressive. ❌Less impressive is the representation within the list of contributors:
🌍the authors are predominantly from the global north
♀️ <25% of the authors are women
[3/9] In fact, 3 out of the 12 briefings are all-male authors (briefing 3: #lowcarbon heating & cooling, 5: #CCS, 12: #ClimateAction).
2 of these (briefings 3 & 5) have all-male reviewers, also.
⁉️Where are the incredible women working in these topics? Their absence is visible.

I believe it was 2012. I was in Jo'burg visiting a friend. We decided to go to the cinema and upon paying entered what we thought was the hall the movie was on. The moment we entered, we instantly felt we were in the wrong hall. Everyone of the white faces turned to look at us.
They didn't have to say anything, but the look was telling. It was a look saying "what are these black people doing in this hall?" Now at that time, we still didn't know we were in the wrong hall, so we made our way through a row trying to find a seat. We could hear the audible..
...gasp as it was obvious we were disturbing the flow. It didn't take 5 mins for us to realise that it was the wrong movie. The movie was about some ballerina girl. The kind of stuff white people like to watch. My friend and I glanced at each other and we decided to exit the room

A fascinating discussion with Mushaal Hussein Mullick, human rights activist, and wife of jailed Kashmiri leader Yasin Malik. She lived in Srinagar with her husband, before India jailed him.

It’s weird that a male presenter can call a woman a “a shallow, self-absorbed, attention-seeking, woke, bandwagon-riding hussy” but if a man said that in the workplace he’d be fired.
It’s weird that these men can write & speak about women like this on a national platform.
It’s weird that brands who conceivably sell to women are okay with it.
It’s weird that other men in media who have women as their audience are all fine their colleague talks like this.
It’s weird that the media workplace culture means women in media have to hear it - & let it go.
It’s really weird that this level of consistent, demonstrable, clear toxicity is actively encouraged.
That the people who read the articles and say “great, go to print” are the same people who report on other kinds of toxic harm regularly, who see the impact of misogyny, racism.

But there are gender-specific obstacles that put female farmers at a significant disadvantage even as they strive to make their mark in the industry and contribute exceptionally to the development of Planet Earth.

We need to break the stigma surrounding menopause. I have not reached it yet but I know many women have so many questions. 🌹🌹
Had a Zoom presentation on Menopause and how to manage it and I can assure you that we shall be re doing the Talk soon. Thank you so much again @gayazahigh Class of 1989 on invitation of Pamela B
Aging is a natural process, and as women grow older their oestrogen levels and even their testosterone levels reduce, this results in eventually stopping the menstrual cycle. The average age of this occurrence is 51 years. However it can happen anytime between 45 to 55 years

A short thread on supporting women's career progression in aerodynamics & fluid dynamics based on the responses of women in the field #WomeninSTEM #IWD2021 #InternationalWomensDay #ChooseToChallenge /1 Image
Comments on equality incl. more inclusive & supportive work environment; removal of systemic barriers; training to encourage culture shift; equal career benefits & salary rights; fair distribution of high/low prestige tasks; blind peer review for research funding in academia /2
Comparison on industry vs. academia: issue of equality in academia more significant (less well addressed?) than industry, where the need for mentorship takes on a more significant role for supporting career progression /3 Image

Women in science, a thread in numbers 👇 (1/x)

This is a talk I gave for our MSc Earth Sciences students today

#InternationalWomensDay
I started by asking them if they regard or treat me differently than they do male teachers or professors. They said they didn't (2/x)
But they probably do! (3/x)

Today we mark #IWD2021, where we celebrate women's achievements and the progress made in the fight for equality. But we must also challenge the narratives, myths, and stereotypes that harm us. Take a look at this thread to see the many things we #ChooseToChallenge 👇👇
“I #ChooseToChallenge the lack of recognition of Black trauma and victimhood. We must better-equip services and justice agencies to understand how trauma is felt and exhibited by Black women, and not allow racist stereotypes to impact the support women need to cope and recover”
"I #ChooseToChallenge hostile environment policies that continue to frame female victims of domestic abuse and sexual violence from diverse communities as ‘undeserving’ of help”

- @docadisa, Head of Centre for Abuse Research, University of Suffolk

My work and what you see is not my fight in the feminist agenda. My personal life is where my fight resides.

It's in the way I choose to live without wanting kids or getting married.

The way I challenged the uncle everyone feared at age 14
The way I date and get intimate with who I want unapologetically...

The way I go to shacks, gather women 15/20 Years older and teach them how to masturbate and negotiate sex.
The way I crave a blunt and I go get it on my own, whilst my weed guys instruct their male customers not to talk to me as I do not like to be disturbed.

The way I go to police stations to talk to the officers on violence against women..

Happy #IWD2021 where I #ChooseToChallenge corporate BS pink washing their lack of equal pay & sure record on sexual harassment.
At 10am I’ll tweet a list of 25 corporations who support #IWD2021  while still having median hourly wage gender pay gaps or bonus gaps.
I’ve also got a package of articles @BylineTimes on pay gap, anti feminist movements & threats to women journalists
That should say poor record, not sure record

International Women’s Day 2021

This year’s theme for the IWD is a theme that brings awareness on the importance of gender equality alongside intensifying our effort in bringing it to the forefront of all important sectors,

#ChooseToChallenge
#MemilihUntukMencabar Image
-including women’s leadership on every angle and corner.
In a narrative of #ChooseToChallenge or #MemilihUntukMencabar this year, I urge that we take an approach to uplift the honour of mankind (karamah insaniyyah) which will not compromise on the issue of injustice and oppression cutting across gender line.

Hari Wanita Antarabangsa 2021

Ahead of #InternationalWomensDay, a thread for women who are fed up of arguing, and men who are feeling defensive:
Women pointing out the discrimination they experience isn’t ‘man-hating.’ I’m 50 years old this year and I’ve met a lot of feminists. I can count on the fingers of one hand the number who hated men. I lost count long ago of the number who are afraid of them. >
The most immediate reason for this is that women live with the threat of violence against them daily. From humiliating catcalling to harassment to abuse, violence and death, the spectrum is long and wide. Look up @CountDeadWomen >

I call LIES!!

Just want to point out that if you were really pro-woman, dear Scotiabank, you wouldn't be rejecting payments from OF creators who are predominantly marginalized BIPOC Canadians.. Mothers.. Women struggling during a pandemic..

Dismantle that barrier and we'll talk
Let March 8th be the day you re-evaluate your priorities and REALLY put women first. The women who get tossed aside by society need your help too - even more so. Make a safe financial space for those who earn a legal wage and STOP THE DISCRIMINATION #saidbefore #choosetochallenge
