THREAD: I want to share a few reflections & principles about why - & how - I try to support #HongKong's #FightForFreedom, have done so for the past 8 years

1. The most important point is that I have never, ever claimed to represent #HongKongers. All I try to do is support /
2. #HongKongers are among the most courageous, intelligent, creative, articulate, eloquent, brilliant people I know, and they're more than capable for speaking for themselves. I don't speak on their behalf, ever - I merely try to speak in support of and solidarity with them/
And why? For the following reasons:

1. #HongKong was once my home, it was where I began my career as a journalist & activist, & so I believe I have a responsibility to help fight for its future /

A huge privilege to be at the totally packed London premiere of @RoOT_film, a profoundly moving & powerful film about #HongKong's #FightForFreedom, & Q&A with the courageous director afterwards

Huge congratulations to @nathanlawkc @HKFF_UK /
It was deeply moving to sing Glory to Hong Kong at the end & give the director standing applause along with hundreds of wonderful #HongKongers

This film is banned in #HongKong & I probably committed another #NationalSecurityLaw crime by going to see it, but I highly recommend it
I urge everyone who has the opportunity to go see @RoOT_film

THREAD: I am writing this thread on "democratic values", because there is some profound misunderstanding & some utterly stupid wrongheaded thinking around which needs to be knocked on the head. Otherwise we're all in real trouble. /
Let me start which two principles:

1. Among us who defend "democratic values" around the world, NO ONE I know wishes to impose anything on anyone;

2. Supporting "democratic values" is NOT about dropping a Westminster-style Parliament or US Congress in the middle of the desert/
Instead, support for "democratic values" is about SUPPORT for those around the world who wish to live in freedom, with human dignity, without fear and with the chance to pursue their potential.

Note: it's about supporting those aspirations, NOT imposing them!/

[Nearly 600,000 HKers just cast votes and say no to tyranny]

1. Ever since #Hongkongprotests last year, I have never underestimated the grit, courage and perseverance of every single #Hongkonger when safeguarding the city’s autonomy and liberty amid #Beijing’s mounting threats. Image
2. When #China attempts to crush dissents with fear and force, nearly 600,000 #Hkers have used our actions today to ward off fear, cast ballots in this first and maybe last #hkprimaries and proved to the world that - Our spirit of resistance will not be killed. ImageImageImageImage
3. Even after the sweeping #nationalsecuritylaw comes into force, HKers have shown our determination for democracy, by protesting with blank white papers and casting ballots in #hkprimaries, in order to let our voices be heard by the world. Image

1. Today is the last day for our pro-democracy primaries. Over 230,000 #HKers have already cast their votes yesterday, well exceeding the original target turnout. With this significant turnout, I am really proud of everyone who has queued and waited in the summer heat.
2. One day more for our last free election, our new target will be 500,000, which amounts to 30% of votes in pro-democracy camp and 10% of the total registered voter in #Hongkong.
3. With 500,000 HKers casting their ballots amid #Beijing’s threats and sweeping #nationalsecuritylaw, our determination would send a strong message to the world: #Hongkongers will not surrender. No matter how repressive the regime goes against us, we will not bow to tyranny.

When thousands of #HKers queued for masks overnight, #HKGov still refused to take measures to stabilize supply and price amid #coronavirus. To combat citywide shortage and price-gouging, @demosisto has just bought another 1,200,000 masks and shipped to #HK. ImageImage
Imported from Honduras, all these masks will be delivered to underprivileged sectors through pro-democracy district councillors. As the procurement costs millions of HK dollars this time, the fund was raised among several pro-democracy parties.
Once again, we express our sincere gratitude to @hkdc_us, @NY4HK and overseas #HongKonger Lady A. It well demonstrates that the international network is the only way to rescue us from this deadly epidemic.

1/ This is my honour to be chosen by Financial Times @FT as one of 50 people who shaped the decade, and, more importantly, as the only #hongkonger on the list.

2/ As this movement is leaderless, I think this honor belongs to #HKProtesters. 2019 is the watershed in #hongkong's history. In the past 6 months, #HKers have been fighting hard with tears, sweat and blood. 6000 of us were arrested, 1,000 persecuted and more crackdowns underway.
3/ We will not forget their names. In the new year, #hongkongers will continue our cause for democracy and freedoms. And I will continue to seek international support and pass human rights bills on Hong Kong.

ATL🇺🇸 in #HongKong: THREAD 1/n

Today SO MUCH in one short video:

* Melee of press, #police, protesters & tourists
* #HongKongProtester being arrested
* UK tourist watching atop the silver sculpture
* Sound of pepper spray being sprayed (fountain-style)
* Tear gas being shot
#HongKong THREAD 2/n

I'm not here to be at the front lines (this guy👇👇👇 is), but to visit with some #HongKongers & their supporters involved.

Think of it as American Thought Leaders🇺🇸, #HongKong Edition, & why not ATL🇺🇸—it's been said that this resembles, in some ways, 1776.
#HongKongProtests THREAD 3/n

Meet conflict reporter @Michael_Yon (with gas mask & orange vest) & #HongKong videographer Eric Fok @RazvenHK (donning mask).

Ok, before you meet them, meet the rather assertive #HongKongPolice. Big blue sign means "this protest is unauthorized."

#Hongkongers, you need to understand the ideological evil and danger manifest in this change of motto of the #HKPolice. It is not an accident. A pledge of "Honor, Duty and Loyalty" to the collective, to the state, must and will end in the bloody sacrifice the individual,
of every individual who refuses to submit to the state. They will proudly, righteously, use however much brutal force as is required. The Nazis proudly engraved this motto on their own logo: "Meine Ehre heißt Treue" -- "My honour is called loyalty" --en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meine_Ehr…
I couldn't more ardently urge every #hongkonger to read the entry on "duty" in the Ayn Rand Lexicon, to learn the mortally dangerous, blood-drenched ideological roots of the term and concept of "duty" -- aynrandlexicon.com/lexicon/duty.h…
