As a teenager I fell in love with the vibrant colors & creative possibilities of the chemistry lab. Nandini ma'am & other excellent teachers, most of whom were #WomenInSTEM at The Mother's International School were my role models. @IWS_Network #VoicesIWS #WomenInSTEM Image

Hello, #SciComm friends! Today I'm tweeting on how to talk to lawmakers about science! This info mostly comes from working in Congress and being a @sfntweets Early Career Policy Fellow. - @fancycomma

Remember Schoolhouse Rock? This song is my jam! #SciPol
The good news about science advocacy is that it's pretty easy to engage your local Members of Congress on the important issues -- it's their job to listen! Science funding, especially biomedical science, enjoys bipartisan support in Congress.
The difficult part is knowing how to do #SciencePolicy or #SciPol effectively. That's what I'm here to help with today!

My time is winding down as an intern on the #APSPPB and I’m supposed to write a report...

So I’m doing a twitter thread instead to share it out. Gather round to learn about my #PlantPathPol experience!
#OnBrand @plantdisease (1/n)
When I first joined the #APSPPB, I was very overwhelmed by being on a Zoom call (lol) with a bunch of professors and “real” plant pathologists. It took me a while to find my sea legs as they say. (2/n)
I didn’t really even know what I was getting into when I signed up for the #APSPPB, but I wanted to see how policy and professional societies intersected. And how #PlantHealth professionals (esp. profs) could impact policy. #PlantPathPol #SciPol (3/n)

Media outlets trained to look for worst-case #climate narratives are increasingly being confronted with pushback from #climate scientists
#scipol #scicomm
Hm, a case of "listening to the media reporting on science" vs. "listening to the science"?
Not clear yet what the #IPCC will make of higher climate sensitivity in many CMIP6 models, but @guardian piece is clearly on the more sensationalist side
As usual, @CarbonBrief has an excellent explainer by @hausfath on CMIP6 models runs, incl. the issue of climate sensitivity… Image

The crux of the proposal is to create a second Deputy Director to head this new well-funded Directorate for Technology. Would be authorized at $2 billion in FY 2021 (on top of an $8+ billion current NSF budget) and $100 billion total over the next five years.

For political movements, "either/or" & "5 minutes to midnight" strategies might work fine, but there will be new carbon budgets and new net-zero years in the future
@Peters_Glen and I wrote about this in @NatureGeosci & #scipol
@Peters_Glen @NatureGeosci There are two problems with this strategy, a more political one and one for researchers at #scipol interface.
Constant "5 minutes to midnight" framing feeds politicians' impression that time will never run out, and that there will always be new deadlines Image
@Peters_Glen @NatureGeosci Constant "either/or" framing gives researchers at science/policy interface problematic incentives to keep "5 minutes to midnight" storyline alive, by shifting assumptions, e.g. on max decarbonisation rates & net negative emissions… & Image

#scipol Image
