“I hope that Dr. Tessier-Lavigne will not brush off these concerns as irrelevant. There appear to be a lot of visible errors in these papers, and some duplications are suggestive [of] an intention to mislead,” @MicrobiomDigest
@deemostofi @StanfordDaily
stanforddaily.com/2022/11/29/sta…
The @StanfordDaily reached out to Science and @Nature, where another of Tessier-Lavigne’s papers containing alleged data alteration was published, for comment. @ScienceMagazine's editor-in-chief @hholdenthorp wrote in an email that he would “check around.”
Marc Tessier-Lavigne’s papers with issues confirmed by the University have accrued tens of thousands of downloads and include some of his most cited work in neurobiology. None of the papers has been retracted or corrected @tab_delete @StanfordDaily #scipol

The @UN #HLEGReport on Net-zero Emissions Committments is out
The problem though: #IPCC 1.5C pathways don't reach net zero GHG emissions by "2050 or sooner", but by the end of the century. The famous "net zero by 2050" (better "early 2050s) is CO2 only
un.org/en/climatechan…
1/
You might be in disbelief, but have a look at the #IPCC AR6 WG3 Summary for Policymakers, Table SPM.2:
For 1.5C with no or limited overshoot (category C1), pathways reach net-zero CO2 in 2050-2055, but net-zero GHG in 2095-2100
ipcc.ch/report/ar6/wg3…
2/n
The difference between net-zero CO2 and net-zero GHG can be explained by the dominant role of non-CO2 GHGs (methane, nitrous oxide, f-gases) in residual emissions and the dominant role of CO2 in removals

With passage of the National Alzheimer’s Project Act (NAPA) in January 2011 and the subsequent “National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease”, the war on Alzheimer’s has only just begun. But one key aspect is glaringly absent: specific funding commitments
science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…
More than 5 million Americans now suffer from Alzheimer, and that number is expected to more than double by 2050. Between 1998-2011, there were 101 unsuccessful AD drugs in development and only three approvals (none since 2003)
@AndrewWLo Kenneth @KosikLab
science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…
"If a single drug-development program takes 13 years
from beginning to end and has a 5% probability of success, the expected waiting time for the next approved Alzheimer's disease drug is 260 years"

Hello, #SciComm friends! Today I'm tweeting on how to talk to lawmakers about science! This info mostly comes from working in Congress and being a @sfntweets Early Career Policy Fellow. - @fancycomma

Remember Schoolhouse Rock? This song is my jam! #SciPol
The good news about science advocacy is that it's pretty easy to engage your local Members of Congress on the important issues -- it's their job to listen! Science funding, especially biomedical science, enjoys bipartisan support in Congress.
The difficult part is knowing how to do #SciencePolicy or #SciPol effectively. That's what I'm here to help with today!

My time is winding down as an intern on the #APSPPB and I’m supposed to write a report...

So I’m doing a twitter thread instead to share it out. Gather round to learn about my #PlantPathPol experience!
#OnBrand @plantdisease (1/n)
When I first joined the #APSPPB, I was very overwhelmed by being on a Zoom call (lol) with a bunch of professors and “real” plant pathologists. It took me a while to find my sea legs as they say. (2/n)
I didn’t really even know what I was getting into when I signed up for the #APSPPB, but I wanted to see how policy and professional societies intersected. And how #PlantHealth professionals (esp. profs) could impact policy. #PlantPathPol #SciPol (3/n)

Media outlets trained to look for worst-case #climate narratives are increasingly being confronted with pushback from #climate scientists
#scipol #scicomm
Hm, a case of "listening to the media reporting on science" vs. "listening to the science"?
Not clear yet what the #IPCC will make of higher climate sensitivity in many CMIP6 models, but @guardian piece is clearly on the more sensationalist side
As usual, @CarbonBrief has an excellent explainer by @hausfath on CMIP6 models runs, incl. the issue of climate sensitivity

The crux of the proposal is to create a second Deputy Director to head this new well-funded Directorate for Technology. Would be authorized at $2 billion in FY 2021 (on top of an $8+ billion current NSF budget) and $100 billion total over the next five years.

For political movements, "either/or" & "5 minutes to midnight" strategies might work fine, but there will be new carbon budgets and new net-zero years in the future
@Peters_Glen and I wrote about this in @NatureGeosci
rdcu.be/RAld & rdcu.be/0TiG #scipol
@Peters_Glen @NatureGeosci There are two problems with this strategy, a more political one and one for researchers at #scipol interface.
Constant "5 minutes to midnight" framing feeds politicians' impression that time will never run out, and that there will always be new deadlines rdcu.be/0TiG Image
@Peters_Glen @NatureGeosci Constant "either/or" framing gives researchers at science/policy interface problematic incentives to keep "5 minutes to midnight" storyline alive, by shifting assumptions, e.g. on max decarbonisation rates & net negative emissions nature.com/news/policy-cl… & onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.100 Image
