I pulled up some numbers for Google Cloud Platform server and storage pricing to see how much it would cost a layperson to do the 31.4 trillion Pi calc.

I didn't look into network costs, or extra time for configs/restart - just raw computation time. I get a price of $173,335.76

This is using standard pricing, not pre-emptible pricing, which is a lot cheaper.

Here's some costs on hardware, at just over $200k. This is raw list pricing - Google and other cloud providers obviously buy this stuff at super cheap pricing. This is ballparking, based on the loose specifications cloud providers give for instances and configurations.

2/ If you want to do this calculation of Pi, just find a bunch of circular objects of different size. Use a string to wrap around and measure the circumference and then measure the diameter. Plot C vs. d - the slope is PI.

3/ But wait! #PiDay is only Pi in the USA where we use date format of month/day/year.

Some people have asked about #PiDay, so here are some thoughts (warning: long-ish thread).

The number π ≈ 3.14, that is, the ratio of circumference to diameter of any circle, has continually captivated mankind since at least the ancient Babylonians four millennia ago.

It even appears in the Hebrew Bible, where King Solomon’s Temple is described as containing a perfectly round ritual basin (“Molten Sea”) measuring exactly 10 cubits across and exactly 30 cubits around. This may suggest that π should be 30/10 = 3 identically,

a mistake in the scripture, but a clever ancient midrash, or commentary, by the 2nd century Rabbi Nehemiah says that this passage in fact conceals in cypher the thickness of the basin! For the last 30 years or so, people around the world have been celebrating “Pi Day”
