The final round of negotiations for a treaty to protect marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction (#BBNJ) kicks off today at @UN HQ!

Here's a quick recap of what's going on [thread ๐Ÿงต]
#IGC5 #UNCLOS
We used to think the #highseas were a deadzone and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (#UNCLOS) doesn't say all that much about its protection.

We now know that these deep & distant waters are full of biodiversity and are a massive carbon sink.
Covering nearly half the planet, these areas beyond national jursidiction (#ABNJ) are increasingly threatened by:
๐ŸŽฃ Fishing
๐Ÿšข Shipping
โ™จ๏ธ Global heating/acidifcation/deoxygenation
โ›๏ธ Seabed mining

Not to mention future uses (e.g. Google holds patents for subsea servers)

๐ŸงตOn #Turkey-#Israel and talk of a #gas pipeline

After a tour in #Greece and #Cyprus, that aimed at appeasing their concerns, Israeli president was today visiting Turkey in the context of improving bilateral relations. Its the first visit by an Israeli president since 2008. >
Though allies since 1996, relations started to deteriorate as early as 2004 & took a huge blow in 2010 w the #MaviMarmara incident. Not going to get into that or the steps that followed towards normalization.

Yesterday, @CIJ_ICJ handed down its judgment on the #maritimeboundary between #Somalia and #Kenya. This was the first judgment since the Courtโ€™s renewal in February 2021 and Judge Donoghueโ€™s election as President (source of all images: @CIJ_ICJ). ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€โš–๏ธ
Kenya did not appear at the oral proceedings before the ICJ after appearing at the preliminary objections phase (link to preliminary objections judgment below). However, the ICJ could rely on its written submissions, filed before deciding not to appear.

Somalia and Kenya had very different views on their maritime boundary. Somalia argued that there was no agreed boundary, so that the ICJ had to delimit a boundary by the 3-stage approach in use since the 2009 #BlackSea case (link below, [115]-[122]). ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿฝโ€๐Ÿ’ผ

Prophetic & very astute.

On 16 August 1953 the #Israel/i Amb to #Turkey Maurice Fisher wrote, inter alia, the following to Jerusalem:

"Our relations with #Turkey have been extremely good of late...[but] these good relations could deteriorate overnight ... >>>
[2/4] ... and we should learn from the bitter experience of others.
The Turks have yet to achieve a standard by which, in the event of disagreement with another state, they can weigh up the positions of both sides ... >>>
[3/4 ] ... For them, there exists one sole principle: in any conflict with a foreigner, whether a private individual, a company or a state, the Turk is always right.ยป

The USA has no business in the South China Sea or the disputes surrounding it - it's not signatory to #UNCLOS! Period.
Re: "Both the United States and China should use all diplomatic powers at their disposal to de-escalate tensions in the South China Sea, and avoid a military intervention that would have devastating impacts not only in Southeast Asia, but globally." I CONCUR!! โœŠ๐Ÿ‘Š

Thread on ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ท&๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ท standoff in East Med. Early Aug ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ท sent seismic vessel & warships for gas research on continental shelf claimed by both, ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ท seeking create fait accompli. This is clear violation international law. ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ทsent warships to prevent this. None wants conflict but big risk.1
#Erdogan wants to revise status quo, incl. the 1923 Lausanne Treaty which defined the borders of the #Turkish Republic. Revisionism is dangerous, thatโ€™s what wars are made of. Militaristic rhetoric is not helping either. 2 bit.ly/3hHosmh
