Students of history know that more often that not, the @scotus hasn’t been on the side of civil rights, that it has a much longer history of upholding discrimination than it does of vindicating the rights of racial & other minorities. This is America and we’re in the 2nd nadir.
@SCOTUS in the late 1800s struck down the civil rights acts. Dred Scott: rules black people cannot be citizens. Plessy: Ushers in two generations of Jim Crow. 1920s upholds school seg of Chinese. 1940s upholds Japanese internment. 1970s: Restricts affirmative action.
1970s-1990s: Restricts school desegregation, affirmative action in hiring. 2007: Strikes down voluntary school desegregation plans. 2013: Invalidates major part of Voting Rights Act. 2018: Upholds Muslim ban. These are just the broad strokes.
