Matt here. One week ago, I was doxxed along with my family and friends. I’m not bringing it up for sympathy. We’re doing great. I’m doing it to highlight the fact that tech companies like @Twitter @facebook & @disqus don’t adequately protect the people who use their platforms.
There’s nothing I personally could have done about The Daily Caller publishing my name. Sure, they’re assholes, but it falls under freedom of speech & freedom of press. There are no laws that could have protected me from that article. But there should be laws pertaining to tech.
The day the article came out, my personal information, including our address, my number, my wife’s number, our former synagogue and every employer I’ve ever had ended up on message boards, @Twitter and Breitbart’s @disqus comment section.
People were also looking to publish my childrens’ school address.

Additionally, despite having my own pathetic former @twitter account with like 10 whole tweets deactivated for almost two years, people were able to pull that info down as well (which led to my doxxing).
Something is deeply wrong in tech when that can happen to a person in a matter of hours and no one does anything for days. The Breitbart comments are just starting to come down. @TwitterSupport took over 24 hours to remove my address. And I was lucky enough to have a platform...
...and people to help defend the relentless attacks.

People, especially minorities, women and the LGBTQ community deal with this shit everyday without an army of people to defend them and tech isn’t doing a thing to keep it from happening.
We need a new set of principles, or even laws, to hold social media companies to account for their lack of oversight and carelessness with personal attacks that have real world consequences.

What happened to me can happen to anyone now because these companies don’t care.
It doesn’t matter what political stance you take or what you believe in or who you are. We should all care about and demand more privacy and security from the social platforms that we use everyday. They make billions off of us. We have the power to change it.
If any lawmaker or lobbyist wants to take up this fight, please comment on this and we’ll reach back out.
