The prospects of a pro-Palestine Labour government under Corbyn raise considerable hopes/fears. But either way, expectations appear exaggerated. For illustration, let's look at the curious transformation of "radical left" Greek leader Alexis Tsipras. >>
In 2014 Tsipras was speaking in pro-Palestine demos against Israeli brutality. But since in power, he has become Netanyahu's best friend in the Mediterranean. Given the Greek economic predicament, Syriza could not be picky about their friends.>>
Corbyn's foreign policy will similarly depend on the position of the UK, economically and politically. Like Syriza, Labour are more likely to arrive in power in conditions of severe crisis. Such crisis is likely to limit their room to manoeuvre and force tough decisions. >>
UK pro-Palestine position could be effective in pushing the EU to take a harder line on Israeli de-facto annexation of the West Bank. This could certainly have impact, even if not immediate. But after Brexit the UK will not have such influence on EU policy. >>
Another field which could see change is the arms trade. Corbyn will want to halt arms exports to Saudi Arabia, Israel and other human-rights abusers. But his government ability to take such line is open to question, especially if it means job losses. >>
Beyond this, a Labour government will no doubt take symbolic decisions, such as recognition of Palestine as a state, and stronger rhetoric on Israeli occupation. But the impact of such steps would be limited, if not accompanied with tougher measures such as sanctions. >>
Ultimately much depends on UK's overall position. A post-Brexit UK, isolated between Trump's US, the EU, and Russia, and facing economic crisis, is unlikely to have much impact on Israel/Palestine, and will probably have higher priorities. //End
