Anne With An E is a freaking precision-honed miracle of a highwire act, holy shit. It's got the darkness--within the tonal confines of a series children could watch--you'd expect from a Breaking Bad alum that never negates its fundamental tenderness for almost every character.
It's subtly unsparing about the insecurities and brokenness of almost everyone on Avonlea, and how they drive people to cruelty--and offers each opportunities, and grace, to let their wounds become the crack that lets the light in.
And the finest balancing act it does is probably with Anne herself--acknowledging the heartbreak and desperation behind the boundless energy and eagerness to please of a kid from an orphanage AND noting the narcissism--and harm--of treating others like characters in her story.
That's a compassion to leave one shaken, wrapped up in a saccharine-appearing children's story, and every element has to be nearly perfect to pull it off. And it *is.* The acting, the writing, the camerawork, the music--every last bit of it.
And the most startling thing about it is that a series about a child is just as much about old people: it's a full-blooded battle cry against the idea that anyone is too old to fall in love, get married, or raise a child. That's what community is for--to fill in where you can't.
It's even got a response to the sort of pride that says you have to be self-sufficient, that you can't accept the help of the people around you, that you're weakened by taking charity.
Anyway, watch the series. It's beautiful and honest and deeply loving. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
