/ People have to do things at their own pace. Theory and practice have to coalesce. It doesn’t happen to all of us in a shouty political way. The truth will out during the GE which I predict will be soon.
I’m grateful to Brexit and people like you. My friend @ukskies got me into this. His passion woke me up to the fact that moaning at bus stops and dinner parties and on twitter is not going to stop this thing 2/
/ that the majority wish will just go away. It won’t go away, and another election will hopefully make the majority understand what is really at stake. This is far deeper than Freetrade and freedom of movement and all of the other issues we talk about on here.
/ at the heart of this and what few are talking about, because it has been forgotten or ignored is not our sovereignty but world peace. I have to admit that until this morning my eye was on the issues facing us in the future, but a tweet called ‘why I became a remainer
/ made the penny drop and sink in. The EU was born out of the ashes of WW2. Unlike the League of Nations it is a successful experiment on how disparate nations can work together to resolve their differences and bring peace and prosperity to millions.
/ I am the first to admit that the EU is not perfect, but when we look closely at what it has achieved over the past 58 years we should be proud to be part of this truly anazing institution. And even more noteworthy is that the EU has not just done wonderful things for
/ it’s member nations, but has been instrumental in the recovery of war torn nations within its ‘borders’ and welcomed and given sanctuary and a second chance to those millions of refugees and migrants who have fled here from far flung corners of the
/ world. So let’s drill it down: the EU is not just about ‘us’ and what we want: it is so much bigger. The EU is about peace and stability in this corner of the globe. We’ve benefitted for nearly 60 years. Do we really want to give that up for what?
/ A nebulous 16th century notion that most of us can’t spell. So next time you’re talking to someone about Brexit and they yawn and make some sarky comment about liberal political elites, try changing tack and explaining that the lasting peace we have and have benefited
/ from is due to one big idea that sparked, grew and caught on: lasting peace. If they really want to give that up in exchange for singing rule Britannia and the pretence if being patriotic, so be it.
/ I for one will keep on fighting. I will stand firm. I will not leave. I am British, I European. I want my child and future grand children to benefit from what we have all worked together to build. So let’s all take a deep breath and walk round the issue again
/ then pick out the issues that will give meaning: which touch the hearts and souls of the many as opposed to the political views of the few. Let’s find a way to encourage those voters who were too switched off to vote last time to find their way to the ballot box next time.
/ let’s focus on what most people in this country, young and old, native and migrant understand and can get behind: lasting peace.
