EU-orchestrated Multistakeholder Forum industry self-regulatory "Code of Practice on Online Disinformation".

Exciting, I know.

It's not perfect-nothing is-and the sounding board has offered some valuable criticism.

But there at least 3 potentially major accomplishments 1/6
1) Signatories including Facebook, Google, and Twitter commit to bot detection and identification by promising to "establish clear marking systems and rules for bots to ensure their activities cannot be confused with human interactions". This is important! 2/6
2) Submit their efforts to counter disinformation to external scrutiny by independent third party: "an annual account of their work to counter Disinformation in the form of a publicly available report reviewable by a third party". Also important! 3/6
3) A joint, collaborative effort based on shared commitments from relevant stakeholders including researchers, where signatories promise not to "prohibit or discourage good faith research into Disinformation and political advertising on their platforms." Important! 4/6
Nothing is perfect, but these are important accomplishments in line with @EU_Commission High Level Group recommendations made to @GabrielMariya. We should look forward to signatories delivering on these commitments, examine the evidence, and welcome more independent scrutiny 5/6
