Only in the UK would a polity's unwillingness to subvert the foundations of its own constitutional order be described as a "failure of political imagination".
Constitutional orders exist to prevent imaginative politicians from undermining the social contract that holds polities together.
The political imagination demonstrated by British leaders from Thatcher onwards when it comes to to the UK's constitutional order has a lot to do with the unleashed forces that are undermining the UK's cohesion as a polity
UK commentators who bemoan how a constitutional order limits the freedom of action of politicians are missing the point of a constitutional order
To quote Sergio Mattarella who witnessed his brother's murder because of his defence of Italy's constitutional order:
"This text represent the guarantee of our freedom...the rules of our cohabitation and indicates criteria for decisions, such as those to be taken in these days"
In Europe there are many willing to sacrifice their lives in defence of constitutional orders. That is a basic social dynamic not fully appreciated in the UK.
