Quick comment: What Sten gets right in my view is that Central / Eastern Europe is becoming the key strategic region again. Where I disagree is his optimism that the UK and France could take over the leadership role in Nato from the US.
America is indispensable to deter Russia, nobody else has the credibility; and only America can lead a pan-European military alliance. A full US withdrawal would lead to conflict and competition. Keeping US engaged therefore main security priority.
The point of an "Europeanized Nato" is not to try to make the US dispensable, which maybe be a noble goal but is not achievable. The point is to strengthen the European pillar in Nato in order to rebalance the alliance: towards greater equality, which is in both sides' interest.
