Unpopular opinion: Most of the wars people say America "lost" we actually won quite easily, it's just that winning wars doesn't get you much anymore, because Norman Angell was actually right.
You can't extract enough value from conquered land to pay for the cost of conquest.

With global resource markets, controlling resources isn't worth the price.

Conquering populations is of little economic value and is a recipe for infinite guerrilla warfare.
About the only thing beating up someone else's army gets you nowadays is your flag icon in the "win" column in a Wikipedia list of wars.
Saying that America "lost" this or that pointless destructive imperial adventure merely tempts people to embrace the right-wing fantasy that if only we had had more national will (i.e. beat up more hippies), we would have "won".
The truth is that wars like Iraq have no good outcome at all, and we should just not do them.
