So a thread run down of this year on Foluke's African Skies. Which needs its own twitter account by the way. I run 2 twitter accounts at the moment. One very intermittently. I am not sure I can stretch to 3. But it could happen. This year FAS was all about decolonisation.
It was not surprising that the most-read blog was about decolonisation. Republished from @TC_Africa, written by Morreira and Luckett, it was a very practical approach to decolonisation. Giving teachers 10 questions to ask when considering decolonising.
folukeafrica.com/questions-acad…
But we must not forget that decolonisation is not just about what we teach but is also evidenced by the power and control structures in society. In this article, I explore how this is evidenced in the origins and current practices of the Nigerian Police.
folukeafrica.com/the-colonial-o…
While the police can be an exemplar of coloniality as colonial artefact, the ontology of law - maintaining global and national societies - also carries aspects of coloniality. I explained this in two presentations I made at the SLSA.

This year in our new unit @BristolUniLaw, @yvetterusse11 and I embarked on decolonial exploration of the relationship between law and race. In the following article I explain the reasons why we have chosen to do so.

This year was also a good year on Foluke's African Skies, for other reasons. On June 8th 2018, Forever Africa Conference & Events (FACE) held its first conference @_FACE2018. FACE is a Pan-African initiative brought together by staff and students at @BristolUni.
It has a decolonial, transdisciplinary, cross-sector, intergenerational, intercommunity, global vision for the Pan-African community. We look forward to seeing you at the next conference. Here is an extended summary of the events at the launch conference: folukeafrica.com/face-2018-summ…
The next #ForeverAfrica event was during #BlackHistoryMonth , where I gave a talk titled 'Pan-Africanism, Afrofuturism and Decolonisation.' I also provided a reading list. folukeafrica.com/pan-africanism…
Also on Foluke's African Skies I began a series on Pan-African icons. I started with one of my favourite people. Cut down way before his time. Thomas Sankara of Burkina Faso. folukeafrica.com/thomas-sankara…
Next was Patrice Lumumba whose brutal assassination is one in a long line of ignominies visited upon the African people.
folukeafrica.com/patrice-lumumb…
Stephen (Steve) Bantu Biko, whose life has been immortalised in song and film, was also featured on Foluke's African Skies.
folukeafrica.com/steven-biko-dy…
One of my starting points for decolonisation way back when, was How Europe Underdeveloped Africa by Walter Rodney. If you have not read it yet, read this blog then read this book. folukeafrica.com/walter-rodney-…
The series will of course resume in 2019, and we will be focusing on Pan-African women. Any ideas let me know.
There was as usual, the main focus of Foluke's African Skies - commentary about Africa. My commentary is usually issue or place-specific - Africa not being a country. My most read commentary was on the Benin Bronzes, for which I did a talk @bristolmuseum
folukeafrica.com/museum-talk-be…
Combining commentary from two (in)famous people, I wrote this post on why postcolonial theory is absolutely vital to understanding the current state of African nations. Things do not just happen, there is always a reason and a theory to them.
folukeafrica.com/the-making-of-…
In the next article, I examine the politics of memory, of being asked, nay, pressured to forget terrible histories. Things that happened, will most certainly happen again if we forget them. If we do not remember, what use is theory?

folukeafrica.com/it-happened-a-…
Also our remembering must be accurate, because what is the use of remembering and theorising and building policies and laws on an inaccurate history? Here I argue that our understanding of the colonisation of Nigeria is based on faulty premises.

folukeafrica.com/nigeria-was-ne…
So we must write Africa differently. We are constantly being written into darkness. So we must intentionally write ourselves out of it.
folukeafrica.com/writing-africa/
But that writing must being with us dreaming impossible dreams of a very different Africa from the one that has been imagined for us. Let us dream new African dreams. Let us dream them now. Let us dream them with open eyes.

This was also a year of movie reviews on Foluke's African Skies. I wrote my review of Black Panther in 2 hours, the day after I watched it. It is, I suspect, my fastest blog post ever. Some of my thoughts have evolved on Black Panther. It happens.
folukeafrica.com/black-panther-…
In preparing my Law Race & Literature lectures for #BristolRaceLaw, I reviewed 'Loving' and 'A United Kingdom'. I explored, how similar themes are depicted in a cinematic medium& lens. How the political & personal intersect with law & power in our imagination.
Another movie which I reviewed, and I think people should watch, if for nothing other than the fact that it is set in colonial Africa, and we can see clearly the similarities between the practices of slavery and colonisation - Palm Trees in the Snow.
In another post I list 20 movies and documentaries I think anyone with an interest in exploring cinematic depiction of the relationship between Law and Race should watch. Again any recommendations for additions are much welcome.

I also did some spoken (written) word. Some were born out of a place of pain. This I wrote when the coverage of the death of Mama Winnie aimed to cast her as 'controversial.' I still don't get how freedom fighters are more controversial than freedom takers
folukeafrica.com/winnie-madikiz…
I wrote this in a crowded and noisy lobby on the back of crumpled receipts and then rewrote it with heart break, very close to tears...
folukeafrica.com/the-middle-pas…
This I wrote for @EpigramPaper's special focus on #MicroAggressions. I felt that talking about microaggressions in an academic piece wouldnt do as much justice as a heartfelt written word one. I have been told by people that it spoke to their experiences

folukeafrica.com/acceptable-tra…
And I wrote and performed a piece for Sister's with Voices hosted by @Ujimaradio in May.
folukeafrica.com/african-queens…
Lest I forget, the brilliant performance of Micaela Coel among others in 'Black Earth Rising'. I wrote a thematic review which apparently Micaela herself read and commented on! Read it yourself and let me know what you think.

We are nearly at the end of the thread! (Ope o! My computer and fingers are complaining.) I introduced quizzed to Foluke's African Skies.

The first one was on African capitals
folukeafrica.com/quiz-1-african…
The second one was on flags. Both are quite difficult. If you haven't taken them yet, please take them and tell us if you are an Africa 'expert' or an Africa is a country-ian.

Finally, FACE 2019 will be happening in June 2019. DV. The theme for FACE 2019 is ‘Building the Pan-African Inspired Multiversity.’ Read this post to find out how you can get in involved. Ipade ayo ni 2019. See you in 2019.
