Russiagate crowd will spin this inquiry as damning for Trump, even though there was no evidence to justify it & none to emerge since. If it deepens partisan warfare between conspiracy-claiming liberals/intel officials & a “Witch Hunt!”-claiming Trump, then the rest of us suffer.
Revealing passage. Trump "caught the attention of FBI" for:
-a joke at presser
-not criticizing Russia "on the campaign trail"
-a "softened" platform -- actually a rejected amendment & still more hawkish than Dems ()
-DNC-funded, fraudulent Steele oppo
This suggests that FBI was relying heavily on public developments, not secret evidence. And it was blatantly misinterpreting what those public developments signified.
1/ (continued) This passage has so much to reflect on -- not just because it shows what FBI's concerns were, but also because those concerns mirror the key Russiagate talking points. Let's go through what this says about what FBI probe & Russiagate conspiracy theory is based on:
2/ "Trump caught the attention of F.B.I... when he called on Russia... to hack into the emails of his opponent, Hillary Clinton." Does anyone actually not get that this was a joke? And do they think that if Trump & Russia were conspiring, he'd announce it at a news conference?
3/ "Trump had refused to criticize Russia on the campaign trail, praising [Putin]." So "refusing to criticize Russia on the campaign trail" is grounds for criminal suspicion? Should we also investigate everyone who "refused to criticize" Israel -- i.e. everyone, except for a few?
4/ "investigators had watched with alarm as the [GOP] softened its convention platform on the Ukraine crisis..." This one is not only false -- the RNC simply rejected an amendment - it's also ridiculous: RNCplatform was ultimately more hawkish on Russia than Dems'! Compare below:
5/ Finally, the FBI's "concerns" were also "fueled" by the Steele dossier -- DNC-funded opposition research full of "unsubstantiated claims" -- to put it as nicely as possible.
6/ So that's background for FBI decision to open a CI investigation on Trump. The fact that it is so baseless offer a window into merits of our 2-year political fixation. Also offers grounds for reflecting on the future -- what if FBI is "disquieted" by a left candidate's views?
