1/Let's dismiss "but his base is holding" take on the new polling, shall we? It isn't. Let's take a look. First, @FiveThirtyEight and Trump's favorite pollster, @Rasmussen, are both seeing significant, rapid decline for Trump:
2/In the new ABC/WaPo poll, only 29% of Americans blame the Democrats for the shutdown, only 24% say what is happening on the border is a crisis and only 31% support declaring a natl emergency. These are brutal #s for Trump. washingtonpost.com/politics/ameri…
3/The new @CBSNews poll has similar numbers: 30% say shutdown is Dems fault; 34% say situation on border is a crisis; 33% support natl emergency declaration. cbsnews.com/news/americans…
4/In the ABC/Post poll only 49% of GOP voters say what's happening on the border is a crisis. In the CBS poll it's 62%. After a year of endless demagoguery, natl guard, huge military deployment & shutdown, Trump is struggling to convince even his own voters it's a crisis.
5/All of this polling suggests Trump is a diminished figure, and is losing his argument about the shutdown and the border, badly. The longer this goes on the more feckless he will appear, risking lasting damage to already battered brand.
6/If you want a better idea of what Dems want to do on the border, and where they stand watch the weekly Dem address by San Diego Congressman @RepScottPeters. This a very smart take by an elected official who knows the border well.
7/Adding a new @CNN poll which has slightly higher numbers on whether it's a crisis, but similar numbers on who's to blame & very clear signs of Trump erosion - in past month he's gone from -13 (39/52) to -20 (37/57), now net negative w/non-college whites. cnn.com/2019/01/13/pol…
8/And given the renewed evidence of Trump's obeyance to Putin, have to put this thread back in play. For Putin, Trump's continued embrace of white supremacy is of enormous strategic importance to his insurgency against the West.
