As May is likely to lose her Brexit deal vote tonight, here are the 6 things I think she got most wrong over the past 2 years:

1. She initially shunned experts, and her early thinking was influenced by individuals with little understanding of the EU and the issues at stake.
2. Set red lines without thinking through the consequences. Everything stems from wanting to end the free movement of people.
3. Didn’t manage expectations nor explain trade offs. At each turn, she set the highest of bars, promised Ronaldo, and came back with an odd looking statue. She is trying to be more realistic now, but has lost control as the backstop has become a proxy for disparate demands
4. The N10 comms operation, for which she is ultimately responsible, fuelled (& often briefed) the endless misconceptions & bits of disinformation that appear in parts of the UK media. This influenced public opinion & MPs who thought they were following a negotiation that wasn’t
5. She often misunderstood or chose to ignore the EU & EU27 position on key issues – integrity of the single market above all – insisting the impossible was achievable, and making the same requests repeatedly despite consistently receiving the same answers, in public and private.
6. She let David Davis stay as Brexit secretary for longer than his 2 week probation period.
