The difference between a MAGA hat and a white hood is normalization.
The whole MAGA brand is about racism. It has been from the beginning. But we aren't supposed to say what's plainly true, because civility. Trump's angle has always been racism, and yet people worry about offending his racist followers by calling their racist hats racist.
We are being held back by our society's unwillingness to call racism and fascism by their proper names. If "objectivity" existed, it would not be the halfway point between how things were and the perspective of our current fascist president. (Also, objectivity is not a thing.)
When people talk about how we need to find "unity" with the MAGA crowd, my stomach turns. I hope yours does too. The issue isn't that we've failed to join hands with these people. It's that we have failed to sufficiently fight back against them.
We don't need to join hands with folks who don't view many of us as human. We need to activate more of the folks who this administration plans to grind under. The disillusioned masses (those non-voters y'all love to trash) must be mobilized.
When one side wants to let the world burn and persecute the vulnerable, unity is not the answer. Polarization is. That word may make you uneasy, but the thing about evil is that decent ppl are supposed to align against it, not shake its hand and agree to disagree.
