X : Are you going to finish the book on mapping?
Me : Slowly, in my own time.
X : That's really annoying.
Me : Fine with me.
X : Why?
Me : Someone will become frustrated enough that they'll finish it and take it forward. Key is to paint the path enough and let others lead.
X : It would be easier if you just finished it.
Me : Mapping is a field, an enormous field from strategy to anticipation to power to finance to operation to culture. It will die as a one person cult. It's essential to nurture others to lead, learn and explore ...
... you do this by opening the door, in my case to the importance of context, and then holding it open for others to walk through. You don't do this by trying to become the guru of something, the canonical source.
... my book on mapping - medium.com/wardleymaps - is a good enough start. There are about 500 pages of fairly useful stuff, all creative commons share alike. This opens the door enough for others to explore.
X : I find mapping too complex.
Me : Then don't use it. Find whatever is useful to you, use that. There's little point in working on something that you don't find useful.
X : I find it useful but it takes a lot of effort.
Me : It becomes easier with practice.
