I'm looking for some good, clear-eyed books about life in the Soviet Union: how the system worked (or didn't), how it was experienced, how the ideologies were projected. Suggestions gratefully received. Thanks.
Thanks everyone for these great suggestions. Really helpful.
I wish I had time to thank every one of you for these excellent suggestions. But thank you altogether! A lot of these books sound fascinating, and just what I was after. My request arises from the conviction that to understand our own system, we must understand others.
