the guy replying to a horrifying article about facebook with "but I've had so many good experiences on there" is the dril tweet about drunk driving getting people to work on time
he doesn't actually say "no, Facebook isn't a huge amplifier for racist conspiracy theories that is measurably destroying our society." he just says it was good for him.
he isn't prepared to contest the assertion that it is literally driving fragile, isolated, undersocialized old people out of their minds and converting once functional members of society into deluded paranoics. he doesn't argue that point
that's bad stuff and all but hey don't take away his fun times. his positive socialization (net impact: one person, temporary) is important, don't threaten it while trying to stop the racist bullhorn (net impact: billions so far, probably centuries of aftershocks)
we actually know now that the human race can't do this. if we blew it all up, one thing we would have to remember is to never build social media again. this outcome is inevitable.
meeting all of the people I talk to on here was not worth trump being able to threaten nuclear war effortlessly, or add likes he doesn't realize are public info on racist conspiracy theories
there are so many stories about senile rulers being carefully concealed from the public but we're now constantly within inches of all our wormbrained, lead-poisoned rulers, and their younger, less wormbrained staff can no longer massage their ravings into something tolerable
all the 40-something GOP staffers can no longer stop the oil barons sons before they can say the quiet part loud, which means they can't walk any of it back, they're just stuck leaning in to the gibberish their bosses spout
everyone's doubling down on doubling down on doubling down. Uncle Pete's racist tirade at Thanksgiving can't be doubted, he can't shamefully shut up and pretend it didn't happen. it's online now. he HAS to lean in
after your 500th shared racist propaganda poster, what opportunity is there for you to walk it back? you can't just stop. all your racist friends will notice you stopped. you can't just walk away.
facebook is there when you're home alone in your empty house where your ex left you, when you're angry and ready to yell at anyone about nothing. you don't have the benefit of ten hours before you see another person in public. public is right there, inches away
repost some racism. something about those fucking liberals. something you wouldn't say if you had to think about it, or say it yourself. feel a little bit better
the least emotionally mature, least self examined generation in history, the people with the least self control, the angriest customers, the ones yelling at the manager over problems they created, should not have been given this. they were not able to handle it.
we have to take their ba ba away. I don't know how. there's no cultural precedent for this. moderation is not the solution. the Facebook moderators are being destroyed by it - who wouldn't be? fucking level with each other. this task is sisyphean at best.
who watches the watchers? how many moderators do you need to surveil 300 million people let alone non-US users? who will surveil them? and what kind of right to be forgotten do we have in that environment?
everyone's calling for a surveillance state. that's impossible. shutting down social media isn't. dry up their money, end this nightmare
I would say that id love to hear how you intend to moderate a service used by ALL PEOPLE, when we OURSELVES are almost effortlessly winning the arms race to avoid automated filters, but I don't want to hear it actually. it's a waste of time
we all know Facebook can't be fixed. we live in an era where websites people depend on to LIVE can simply dry up and die overnight due to the whims of a couple men. we have to sunset Facebook if we want to survive
