THREAD: JCs unwinnable game

So, in line with the Labconf18 motion, the party will back a PV amendment as a last resort IF Labour's deal falls AND May's passes without changes to her plan. There is much to be said for this widely misunderstood move. #Lexit #GTTO #NoPVYesGE 1/
Corbyn has never unilaterally dictated Labour's Brexit policy. Via much needed democratisation he empowered the party to decide, tho his campaign focused on the reforms the EU would need to make for it to be acceptible to a socialist UK gov. 2/
There are central pillars of the EU that favour capitalism over socialism so it seems unlikely it would ever reform enough to meet those requirements.
But remember JC came in on a 200:1 chance, surrounded by Neoliberals. He had to find a route thru the snakepit to power. 3/
The gov rebranded actual brexit as 'no deal'. JC used their own spin against them by demanding it be taken off the table. After 30+ Tory ministerial resignations & a tsunami of opposition to 'no deal' that strategy has positioned JC as the voice of the majority in the house. 4/
From the opposition benches he could not dictate how brexit played out, he could only use his position to put pressure on the gov.
He's tried everything available to get a less objectionable brexit thru. He tabled Labour's proposal. It was defeated... 5/
He offered to support May's deal if she made key concessions, she didn't. He could not simply ask for WTO & see it materialise. He would have been sidelined as MPs pressed ahead with their plans to overturn the result. He must continue to be influencial to the process. 6/
If the Cooper amendment passes, a delay to brexit would risk a full reversal regardless of what Corbyn endorses. He cannot be made an irrelevence at this crucial moment. He had to maintain pressure on the gov. Labour's first priority is still their deal, but it will fail. 7/
The 'Independent Group' will help May win a VoNC. How else can JC dictate proceedings?

This commitment to a public vote is if MAYS DEAL PASSES! So a lock against the worst sort of BRINO. Remain really is better than that, u can't vote out of BRINO cos the EU need to agree! 8/
The PM is at the wheel, pretending to hurtle towards that fake cliff edge. JC can be the driver if he uses PV to prevent May's deal passing. Still bound by party democracy to not rule it out, he's avoiding till there's zero options left & using it to steal a victory from May. 9/
We despised Bliars dictatorial style of leadership. The very antithesis of the Labour movement. Corbyns regeneration of the party, met with huge resistance at every level, has been focused around empowering the members. So the composite motion was healthy & inevitable. 10/
He's tried every tool available to him to make sure democracy is enacted despite parliaments intent to steal the leave vote.
Labour's conf motion is being followed to the letter, he's not changed tack at all. He campaigned for remain & reform via party democracy. 11/
He came in on a 200:1, w/ a PLP stuffed full of inherited Blairite sabateurs, vs a capitalist media that also didn't want him in power, achievemed so much despite the tides against him, but he's not done enough? 12/
A list of JCs achievements from an old thread:
Biggest defeat ever of a gov. 1st defeat on finance in 40yrs. 1st gov to be held in contempt. meaningful vote. 30+ Tory ministerial resignations. Biggest vote increase since WW2. NEC left swing. Gov unable to pass legislation. 13/
The genius of this move is: "If the ERG get a whiff of a PV Hobsons choice remain vs BRINO they will never vote for May's deal. This is just an exercise in bad PR for Labour." via @Williamos6
It can't be repeated enough: this PV endorsement would only be IF MAYS DEAL PASSES.
14/
What could he have possibly done for the sake of Lexit? Stuff the shadow cab entirely of Lexiteers? No Barry gardiner, no John Mcdonnell, who for their faults have contributed massively. Then a much bigger split long ago, risking no meaningful vote & May's vassel waved thru. 15/
The game is far from over. JCs statecraft has been sublime amidst the tornado to destroy him & steal the leave vote. If he cant get the votes to make brexit actually happen, he can at least prevent BRINO. That's his unwinnable game. But we're not there yet. 16/
