A group that posted anti-vaccine billboards around Toronto said they want the public to get educated about vaccines. Here are a few facts for those interested in vaccine facts:
In 1967, there were 10-15 million cases of smallpox every year. In the 20th century, it killed around 300 million people. 30% of those who got it died. Following a massive global vaccination campaign, smallpox was officially eradicated in 1979.
Vaccines are not risk free. Experts say 1-3 in every million will experience a serious adverse event. But keep this in mind: 1 in every 1,000 people who get measles will develop encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). 1 in every 3,000 with measles will die.
Public Health Ontario's 2017 vaccine safety report shows of 8.5 million vaccine doses, there were ~700 adverse events. Majority were minor, i.e. sore arms. There were 26 serious AEs, including Kawasaki disease, 1 case of meningitis. Translates to 3 serious events/million doses.
A measles outbreak in Madagascar has killed more than 900 (mainly children) and sickened nearly 70,000 people in the past few months. Vaccines are hard to come by there & desperate families can't get them. Those poor children. #VaccinesWork
