Federal wildlife refuge near me says they're shuttering their FB page due to "new direction the Department of the Interior is taking to communicate with the public." Another one, Agassiz, already appears to have shut its page down. facebook.com/rydellnwr/phot…

Other refuges in the region either don't appear to be affected or aren't telegraphing any changes, so who knows.
Update: Rydell and several other midwestern FWS components will be "temporarily unpublishing" their FB pages "until we are able to properly maintain it in a professional and accurate manner." I'm told this means posting more, and also 508 compliance?
This seems like a weird way to do that. Like if you want to improve your page you can just... improve your page? Anyhow people up here are still pissed off, they rely on these pages to find out about events the refuges are putting on and whatnot.

University of California terminates its contract with for-profit academic publishing giant Elsevier, which wanted to charge University authors "publishing fees" to make their work un-paywalled. universityofcalifornia.edu/press-room/uc-…
How academic publishing works: Authors don't get paid for their research. Reviewers don't get paid for peer review. Journal editors don't get paid to edit. The publishers take the final product and sell it back to the universities via multi-million dollar subscriptions.

Google, a company with annual revenues of $136 billion, wants concessions totaling $15 million from a central Minnesota county with fewer than 100,000 people.
On an annual basis the concessions would amount to 0.0006% of Google's revenue.
As in a lot of these situations the net benefit to the county, even with the tax breaks, is clear and positive. But the question becomes how far do you let these giant wealthy companies go to claw back the benefits they bring to a community?

Twitter released the tweets of another 418 russian accounts on January 31.
I'm going to use this thread to take a look at the information they gave us about these accounts.
And talk about other bots and trolls you can find using this data.

Of the 418 accounts 1 was a double, @CovfefeNationUS it was already included in the last batch of accounts.
One was not actually suspended until I reminded them.
2 of them had active backup accounts at the time of publication of the data.
around 320 of the accounts I had tweeted about a lot. So i'm not going to bother going back over them.
I found them right after NBC put out the 1st batch of tweets from the russian trolls.
They were bots, and most of the data about what they did is unavailable.
