/ Belated look at conflict among House Dems over GOP motions to recommit. Graph arrays Democrats by partisan lean of district and their 2018 vote. Lime green Dems voted w/ GOP to amend background checks bill by requiring report to ICE when undocumented person buys a gun.
/ Democrats voting with GOP almost entirely representing GOP-leaning districts, as was reported. But keep in mind that those LIME members (not surprisingly) are ALSO marginal members-- running in GOP friendly districts kept down their vote margins.
/ Not show in in the chart, but also keep in mind that these weren't all first members-- about a third were returning members, who surely understood the partisan dynamics of these gotcha-amendment MTRs. Which raises a question ....
/ It's hard for me to tell from the reporting whether this was a case (and the preceding other MTRs) of *no* signals from the leadership or *mixed* signals from different party leaders. Granted, there's little time to react strategically to an MTR since GOP keeps them underwraps
/ But raises questions about how party leaders will manage this internal Caucus cleavage (or others) in a world in which those differences surely PALE in comparison to the differences between the parties.
/ Good @Edsall piece explores the Democratic rift and possibility that Dem moderates are more cross-pressured than the GOP moderates they replaced.
