Theresa May treats Brexit like an act of God, something to be endured or overcome. The people voted so we must do their bidding. But it's not like that at all. Politicians are there to act in the best interests of the population, not to enact every idea, no matter how wacky.
Three years ago, we had no idea just how unachievable a good Brexit would be. (Not because of who's negotiating, but because of the nature of our existing relationship with the EU, and everything it gives the UK.)
But now we know. It's clear as daylight that no form of Brexit - and certainly not Theresa May's frankendeal - will leave us better off. Indeed, the opposite is true. We will be poorer, more isolated, less safe.
In any other situation, in all walks of life, people change their minds when faced with compelling new information that invalidates their original position. So why does Brexit magically have to be different?
Because here's the rub: what do those chasing Brexit think will happen on 30 March, when the UK wakes up to find it's been sold a chimera, a pipe dream, a fiction, a pig in a poke. What then? Too late to rewind? We're out of the EU, with all the hellish consequences that entails.
Because I can promise you one thing: I will never forgive. I will never forget. And I am willing to bet millions and millions of others won't either. Brexit will break Britain, literally and metaphorically, and there will be no putting the pieces back together again.
Brexit is not something to be suffered, endured, survived. It is an idea that has been tried and found wanting. Let's stop pretending, to ourselves and to the world. Let's revoke Article 50 and get on with the important stuff instead.
