Thread : The Honor & Shame syndrome
1- All our frets about our society being susceptible to the continuity & persistence of mediterranian modes of thought get vindicated when we see a father being more worried about his honor than the wellbeing being of his abducted daughter
2- A couple of weeks ago, A 13 yr old girl was abducted by someone she was well familiar with. Her father's servant. Multiple hideouts were first pinned down where suspects were believed to be sneaking at & then raided, but all of that was to of no avail for days.
3- The offender was whip-smart, to dodge the system he kept changing his cell number, locations & IMEIs & so would the linkers associated, making it one hell of a job for us to pursue him down.
While my team & I were at that, her parents would come to my office
4- sobbing their eyes out, worried sick about the honor that was now at risk, as most of us, they too are conditioned to believe that their honor is bind with their daughter, as a result, the amount of pressure mounted on me further.
5- Finally, after a long rescue operation, we were able to locate the culprit & recover the girl, from Islamabad today. However; what grieves me now is, how will this girl proceed to live a normal life when her own parents are worried more about the so-called dishonor her
6- Abduction has caused them than to cherish her safe recuperation.Although im delighted to report that she is now in guarded hands of her family, it dejects me to deduce from what i have seen in such cases, that life for this innocent girl won't ever be a normal business again.
7- Absolutely zilch of her fault, nonetheless, this society will always find itself putting her on the podium, staged on its rotten base, seeking answers from her about the things happened to her that she had no control over at every step of her life.
8- I'm sure all of us, are very well aware of the fact that things would have been completely different had it been a boy. I have earned the right to ask from the people that constitute our society, will she ever be able to untangle herself from the vicious judgmental and
9- And horrifically wicked strings of our society that chokes women, after this unfortunate episode of her life? Will we let her ever be herself again? I guess NOT!
It may appear to be a very pessimistic approach on my end, but to my dismay it’s the truth of the day,
10- This so-called honor & shame syndrome will continue to prevail as a sex-linked binary opposition, in which men’s honor is associated with women’s ‘shame’ for centuries to come, if we continued to neglect to fix the strata of our society from the roots down to the shoots up.
