Believe it or not, I don’t insert myself into every discussion BUT reading this morning’s coverage in @hartfordcourant about suicide - there is a gaping hole in the coverage. How about talking to people who’ve had suicidal thoughts, or made attempts, and are still here?
We are out here. There are more of us than you can possibly imagine. The reason so many of us don’t talk about it is because of that stigma that persists despite all of your years of anti-stigma campaigns.
Until we stop medicalizing and diagnosing human distress, until we start valuing genuine human connection, until we recognize and share each other’s pain, until we learn how to sit with uncomfortable feelings ...this will continue.
Where is the talk about Alternatives to Suicide from @WesternMassRLC, and those support groups, held locally at @ToivoCenter? westernmassrlc.org/alternatives-t… #Alt2Su
Is it too frightening to contemplate that those of us who have had thoughts of suicide, and perhaps even acted upon them, yet somehow managed to survive, may add something to the dialogue that challenges pretty much everything the experts think they know?
Please include that among your thoughts today. And please please know that too often, reaching out for “help” results in more trauma and coerced psychiatric treatment. Be aware that one of the times that presents the highest risk for suicide is AFTER discharge from a psych unit.
Probably could get another op-ed out of this, and if anyone’s interested in publishing it, get in touch with me. But I’m not doing this one without getting paid for it - I know the emotional toll of a piece like this will put on me. You’ve gotten the Twitter thread for free.
