1 in 160 👧👦 has an autism spectrum disorder .

🌏🌍🌎, people with autism are often subject to stigma, discrimination and human rights violations. This needs to stop!
#Autism refers to a range of conditions characterised by some degree of:

🔻impaired social behaviour, communication and language

🔻a narrow range of interests and activities that are both unique to the individual and carried out repetitively.

#Autism begins in childhood and tends to persist into adolescence and adulthood. In most cases the conditions are apparent during the first 5 years of life. #WorldAutismAwarenessDay
Individuals with #autism often present other co-occurring conditions such as:
🔻Epilepsy
🔻Depression
🔻Anxiety
🔻Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

@nitawhite1 @ja54kki I think everyone should feel optimism for the future, but we really need to talk about the huge disparity between these young people, and those at other points on the ‘spectrum’ - particularly those who are non-verbal, need constant 2:1 supervision and all their care needs met...

So it’s challenging, these young people have bright and exciting futures ahead of them and every reason to be optimistic. Others have..
@nitawhite1 @ja54kki ...very different lives, a scary future where when they turn 18 their parents can no longer make key decisions for them as they may not be capable of deciding what T-shirt to wear that day, local authorities / mental health can choose toliterally drag them off to an institution..

As an initial matter, there was a United Nations report on the Venezuela sanctions, which bluntly stated that the "economic sanctions kill" Venezuelans. The full report itself is very readable. web.archive.org/web/2019013020…
So let's look at some of the sanctions that were imposed in August 2017. Section 1 over here makes it illegal for the government of Venezuela to raise any kind of money, through the sale of bonds or securities. It also makes it illegal for Venezuelan companies to remit profits.

Perhaps I should start by saying that just about everyone in Australia will have spoken, or will speak, to a health professional or counsellor about mental distress, so this is not a fringe issue or something relating only to those with severe mental health conditions.
Alternatively, most or all will support someone in mental health crisis, or indirectly experience the impacts effective or poorly-functioning services during encounters with neighbours, friends, schoolmates, workmates, etc.

America has been on the front lines of the humanitarian effort to stop the ethnic cleansing being committed against Rohingya, but we must not stop there.
