"Nobody wanted him in the first place," a senior admin official said. "He was a John Kelly buddy that everybody tried to stop the president from hiring. But Kelly wanted him and pushed the president. This was before he was chief of staff. He'd never worked in the Secret Service."
Trump had wanted someone other than Alles to lead the agency & he really liked James Murray, a career member of USSS set to take over in May, because "he was highly recommended from the inside," per a WH official. The official said Trump & Murray "hit it off when they met"

A few bare-bones thoughts on the upcoming Trump-Kim summit in a week’s time. I feel like I’m beating a dead horse here because people smarter than I have already made these observations, but bear with me.
First, the ugly:

The administration’s diplomatic strategy depends on which official you talk to. Trump says he isn’t in a rush. Biegun says it will be a process involving step-by-step concessions. And a senior admin official (Bolton?) says DC not interested in incrementalism(2).
All of this mixed messaging not only looks juvenile for those keeping score, but it’s also confusing to the North Koreans. Kim may very well be listening to all of this and wondering whether Biegun is actually speaking for Trump when he talks to his representatives (3)

About an hour and a half after the NYT published an anonymous senior admin official trashing Trump, he's speaking at the White House to a gathering of sheriff's department officials from across the nation.
TRUMP says “we have someone” who is saying they're part of the resistance.
The anonymous admin official is probably somebody who's failing and is "here for all the wrong reasons," Trump says.
