The Muslim families who live in my building, of which there are many, always leave food in the lobby with a note offering it to any who need it.
The children are sweet & hold the door for me when I barrel through, even if they are 3 yrs old & not strong enough to hold it alone.
I was teary eyed in my elevator recently and a Muslim neighbor asked me if I was okay, I told him my mother had cancer, and I was having a hard time. He offered to pray for me and gave me his apt # and extended an invite for dinner with his family should I need it.
I often watch, without exaggeration, 20 children hold hands together, laugh & play as they run up the street w/parents and older family members to load into their cars as they head to worship. The laughter of this procession of children is my favorite part of this routine.
Another Muslim neighbor has a son on the spectrum. I watch this father exhibit ENDLESS patience. His child often has outbursts when they leave the building. I have watched him hold his boy & soothe him. He always manages to do it.
The boy always ends up smiling.
There are so many wonderful Muslim people in my building. They make my experience as a human being richer. I hope today they feel safe and welcome and no one harasses them.
Overt, misguided generalizations about their faith by powerful people threatens to disturb their peace.
I remember 9/11 well. I remember my scared Muslim neighbors then. I dont want these families and fellow Americans to feel threatened and I do not wish for any of them to be hurt. To counter hateful narratives, I hope you will share your stories of diversity in your communities...
And how it has improved your life.
