A lot of justifiable anger about the "is a woman electable" thing on my TL. But the thing is, when I read the quotes from the sources -- nearly all women -- I don't hear sexism. I hear despair, and that's a different thing. nbcnews.com/politics/2020-…
Physical reactions, "I can hardly think about it," "it makes me sick how ugly this could get." Like: Maybe last time around was genuinely so "ugly," so misogynistic, that some crucial part of this woman's ability to believe in her country or fellow citizens was wounded.
Another woman -- presumably, like a lot of these women, a Boomer, who grew up with the second wave -- just looks at who won, and she perceives it, rightly, as a rebuke or a fuck-you to women generally.
Again: These aren't women who don't know how sexism works, these are women who know it works, and who believe it's already won. Who are feeling too beaten-up to wage another fight.
I think they're wrong. I think a woman can win if we actually get behind her. But I also think that we spent 2016 and forward telling those women they didn't matter, the progress they'd made was worthless, their hopes were stupid, and now they're giving up. Which is what happens.
We can elect a woman, but getting those women back on board means taking them seriously, not mocking them, not calling them shitty centrist winemoms or projecting all our sins on them, getting them to believe progress is possible & we're not going to make them do this alone.
