To be brutally honest, I think if you're seriously committed to becoming a man or a woman, you should make every effort to look, feel and sound like your targeted gender. Only by doing so can you truly be perceived as who you really are by the general public, at least for now.
I've made this point before and I'll say it again, at the risk of being branded as a "privileged binary trans woman" or some sh!t. Gender is not merely something you perceive yourself to be; how other people perceive you also plays an important part in the equation.
Unfortunately, the smash-the-gender-binary crowd seem more interested in making up novel gender identities rather than working on social integration, and it's not helping anything. I'm sure I'll be accused of "internalized transphobia" by those people, but I frankly don't care.
And oh, do you think passing has always been easy for me? Hell no! It took me several years' intensive work -- on top of pre-existing chronic pain -- to get to where I am today. If I have any privilege as a trans woman, I freaking *earned* it.
