Wittes says he's heard Russia counterintelligence work described as "an investigation with no beginning and no end."

Baker agreed. "It's a persistent, long-term threat."

Baker responds to William Barr's "spying" comments and criticism.

"It didn't make sense to me."

"I honestly don't know what he's referring to."

Baker said Chris Steele had a reputation as a reliable source, but he didn't provide the predicate for the Russia investigation.

"We're not stupid. People roll in to give us information all the time, from all kinds of different angles."

Baker read the FISA warrant application before it was submitted. He remembers being confident that it was "consistent with the constitution and laws of the United States."

Should there have been more disclosure on Steele's information? Baker says it was sufficient.

"Nobody is going to miss a page-long footnote in regular type."

Trump has been saying the Russia investigation was a "coup."

"There was no attempted coup," Baker says.

"Had anybody proposed such a thing . . . I would not have tolerated it whatsoever."

Baker is taking pains to say everything in the Russia investigation was done by the book. At one point, he said, he actually pulled out a copy of the attorney general guidelines to make sure.

Baker on Vol. 2 of the Mueller report focused on obstruction case:

"It's troubling to say the least. It's alarming."

"Even if it doesn't rise to the level of illegality, it sure looks like a pattern of corruption."
