@DrJoeAbah @NgozikaDanny @victorr_ugo This is commonsensical Distinguished. We shouldn’t need links and data to know that we are chasing shadows by banning pesticides instead of focusing on core issues. The critical issue here is the deeply entrenched inequality. Yet you want more job losses? 🤔
@DrJoeAbah @NgozikaDanny @victorr_ugo The same WHO you quoted sir estimates that approximately 1 Million people die each year from suicide. Nigerians are not known to contribute to this number until recently with a spike in the desperate need to escape unbearable suffering. This is why I find the digression appalling
@DrJoeAbah @NgozikaDanny @victorr_ugo You are talking about 7year old being free to buy Pesticides to harm himself after being scolded, and the critical solution to this is the ban or regulation of the pesticide? If he had chosen to jump off their building will we change the building code for the area?
@DrJoeAbah @NgozikaDanny @victorr_ugo Suicide in teens is borne out of a plethora of factors of which access to devices deployed is part but can’t be limited to this. A critical analysis of childhood abuse, recent traumatic event, lack of support network, hostile social/school environment & exposure like minded teens
@DrJoeAbah @NgozikaDanny @victorr_ugo ...I believe the dialogue would be better couched if not premised on the attempt to indict a product for this. This wouldn’t help suicide attempts as this would simply change the devices deployed. We should be talking about engagement & warning signs.
@DrJoeAbah @NgozikaDanny @victorr_ugo We should be talking about suicide helplines and organisations. We ought to prioritize enlightenment on common suicide risk factors and how to offer quick response and support. We can prevent it while we hold Govt to account on putting a premium on our lives.
@DrJoeAbah @NgozikaDanny @victorr_ugo Mental health is now a topical issue. Nigeria now rank as the top five suicide prone countries. Spectator index on July 29, 2018 published a WHO research that shows Nigeria placing 5th with 15,000 suicide in every 100,000 suicides. This is deeper than an attack on Sniper.
@DrJoeAbah @NgozikaDanny @victorr_ugo Another research shows that 31% of the cause of death in Nigeria is Poverty & Malnutrition (24% & 7% respectively according to @NOIPolls). With the reinforcement of “I better pass my Neighbour” mentality, that keeps majority in the rat race, mental health issues et al...
@DrJoeAbah @NgozikaDanny @victorr_ugo @NOIPolls ...and the attempt to normalize oppression, depression may eventually be accepted as a welcome development at this rate. Control of accessibility to pesticides or regulation of mix may be a welcome development but it is not as critical in my view to public enlightenment.
