The goal of impeachment is not removal. This is a straw man. The goal of impeachment is impeachment: to apply Congress' strongest-possible tool for holding a POTUS accountable for crimes. The process educates the public and shines an extremely bright spotlight on his crimes. 1/
If you show the public all the crimes Trump committed (which they're already inclined to believe) and then the Senate protects him, you have a pretty darn good argument for why the ballot box is the only way to remove him - along with the senators who are protecting him.
There are already bipartisan voices concluding Trump did crimes. There are 450 former federal prosecutors, Rs & Ds, saying he’d be charged with multiple felonies. Impeach him, then make Collins and Gardner explain why they are voting to protect a criminal. washingtonpost.com/world/national…

I genuinely wonder if it ever occurs to people who write things like this to stop and think, even for a second: “maybe I’m not alarmed because I am literally the last person who will be severely affected by any of the things other people are alarmed about.”
Worth noting that the author telling us not to be alarmed worked for Senator Bob Kerrey, who had this to say about his vote to repeal Glass-Steagall in 1999.

I have sat through so many meetings where consultants say, “don’t talk about this issue, talk about this other issue where you’re already winning!” But in a news-saturated environment you can only shift the conversation if you have news-driving events. Message bills are not that.
By all means, run a gagillion ads on health care and drive that message with paid media. But you can’t drive national news out of DC with message bills that will die in the Senate and never be signed by Trump. You just can’t.
Meanwhile, you can’t just sit around for a year. Trump will drive news every day reminding America how badly he deserves to be impeached. The choice is whether to spend the next 16 months explaining why you’re not using your power to check him or squaring up and facing the fight.

This reflects a profound lack of understanding about how messaging works on a national level. House Dems can't drive a message by passing bills everyone knows are going nowhere. Meanwhile there will be a steady drumbeat of news that makes Trump seem like he should be impeached.
House Dem leadership seems to be trying to sell its caucus on the idea that if not for impeachment talk, we'd all be talking about health care or whatever because of their message bills. That's a bill of goods. News drives news and bills that are going nowhere aren't news.
Passing those bills is fine & good. When there's health care news like rising premiums or lawsuits, we can talk about health care and the bills will help with that. But the idea that these bills can drive the national conversation between now and the election is a total fantasy.

That’s because the president is neither wily nor shrewd.
2. Donald Trump could have given the Congress what it was asking for in dribs and drabs. He could have pretended to act in good faith while stringing along members of the House Judiciary Committee.
3. Instead, the president opted for “fighting all the subpoenas.” The White House has said the entire Mueller report is protected by executive privilege. It isn’t. Trump has gift-wrapped a rationale for impeaching him.

“He’s just not worth it” is brilliant messaging.

Setting aside the actual question, this message blows up GOP messaging in advance of 2020.

Pelosi is saying to the GOP, “You want to make this election about defending that pathetic orange sniveling bully? Have fun with that.”
Pelosi goes on to say that “unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan” we shouldn’t go down the road of impeachment.

BIPARTISAN is the key word there.

“Compelling and overwhelming” evidence exists.

But Republicans stand by Trump anyway.

Our Founders anticipated someone like Trump. They never anticipated a full 50% of lawmakers would support that person no matter what.

That reality puts Pelosi and other Dem leaders in a challenging position.

Without some GOP participation, impeachment will be mere theater.
