#JerusalemDay next wk commemorating Jewish reunification of Jerusalem in 1967. When Allenby & Brits arrived on Hanukkah eve in 1917, a British officer brought a Torah scroll. The table next to him was for Hanukkah candles.

One year later, Hanukkah eve 1918, Jews of #Jerusalem proclaimed #JerusalemDay to commemorate anniversary of their deliverance with prayers, Psalms, & special prayer for the King of England. This was a flyer "In Honor of Liberation Day" calling on synags & Yeshivot to participate
Allenby did not go to the Kotel on the day he accepted the surrender of Jerusalem. He was in the Old City for 15 minutes to read a proclamation & left, but the photographer who took the iconic pic of Allenby took the pics of Torah at the Kotel.
Photographic evidence of Jews at Kotel 60 yrs before the Brits. I believe this is first photo of Jews at the Wall, taken in 1859 -- around the same time as Wm Steward, Lincoln's SecState, visited #Jerusalem. He wrote Jews made up 1/2 of city, Muslims & Christians each 1/4.
1859 pic of Jews at the Western Wall was taken by Mendel Diness, a Jewish watchman who learned photography. He moved to US, changed name to John Mendenhall Dennis when he became a Christian Preacher.

More proof of Jewish #Jerusalem before photography. I found this illustration of Jews in #Jerusalem's Istanbouli synagogue in the Ottoman Archives . It appeared in an 1836 travelogue by John Came. The synagogue was established in the 1760s by Turkish Jews.
Let's go back a little more. The Golden Gate of the Temple Mt & its Chamber is now claimed as a Muslim site, Bab el Rahma.
