For survival, the vast majority need the protection & support of groups. Traditionally, family & community. Today, depressingly, identity affiliations.
Most people are susceptible to addictions, bad financial decisions, bad life choices, etc. (See IQ & grade distributions.) They are not wired to withstand the isolation & rejection that comes with iconoclasm.
BUT enigmatism, iconoclasm, quirkiness, contrarianism & nonconformity do become available to a select *few* who are able to generate escape velocity. To achieve high social status. Essentially, generating their own gravity. Others will want to be in their orbit. See: Peter Thiel.
Most can't afford an FU attitude before having FU money.
Smart heretics without rich parents or who don't commit hard enough to generate escape velocity will fail. No group protection, no personal gravity. This is the professional class & is better off in 6-figure corporate jobs.

Smart is not good enough. Hard work is not good enough. Emancipation is expensive.
A select few, typically from poor backgrounds w/few options but certain gifts, don't know any other way to be.
They are more free. No reputations, resumes or 401Ks to protect.
But they will ride a financial, emotional & experiential rollercoaster for life. Even if they make it.
