I am calling BS on Bernie's take on this. It is unlikely elementary school kids are going hungry anywhere in America for lack of affordability. I think free school meals are provided almost everywhere if parents demonstrate financial need. 1/2
Kids in school go into negative balances sometimes because they forget to bring lunch money or some other transient parental oversight. 2/2
If anything the free school meals system is gamed to high heavens, at least in our school district. It's unbelievable how many school kids are getting free meals because of financial need, and yet, almost without exception, they all have iPhones. Go figure!
