This is not a new phenomenon, although it's good that it's getting attention. There are many ways to make cross-border censorship happen. This is just one of them. I had a piece I wrote about Turkey disappear, for example,
after lawyers (for the sleazy Turkish televangelist I wrote about) sent an e-mail to the hosting service of the site I wrote it for, claiming it was "defamatory." The hosting service told the site they had to take it down in 24 hours or the site would disappear.
My publisher caved immediately. (I quit.) This was about seven years ago, I think. It made me acutely aware of this problem. It wasn't the first time something like this had happened, either.
