These are federal government loans. It’s not like I went to a back alley loan shark, though at least I might be able to reason with one of those. “Be rich enough to front 150k or don’t become a lawyer” will seem like a less great game plan the next time you need representation.
Btw, this is why people are ashamed to talk about this. We are doctors, lawyers, graduate and PhD level professionals who feel like we somehow should have known better, when the truth is this was all that was available to us and there are no affordable tuition grad schools.
We were told we’d make enough to pay them off. It felt worth it. We weren’t told that wages would stagnate and our balances would triple in the meantime.

And this is the result. More and more people will forgo education because they can’t afford it. Only the rich (mostly white) will become healthcare professionals, lawyers, accountants and professors. Good luck with that kind of country.
