Here's how the Tories could wipe out Labour for a generation...
1) Appoint bumbling new PM
2) PM guns for no deal
3) Parliament bands around VONC as only way to stop no deal
4) VONC succeeds
5) JC tries to form a minority government
6) Labour in power(ish), has to push for Brexit
No GE is required if VONC process succeeds. If Labour can get "enough" support to form a Government (which, given that this is a hail Mary attempt to block no deal, they should albeit very temporarily) then tag, Jeremy Corbyn is it. And at that point, Brexit rebounds on Labour.
You can bet someone deep in Tory HQ has already wargamed this particular scenario. After all, they do devious as easily as breathing.

Presumably there's a mathematical chance that Boris Johnson will be the only one to clear the minimum vote threshold in tomorrow's round of voting. Goodness knows what happens then? Do they fish out a lucky loser, even though they didn't make the cut? Do they crown BJ outright?
Or do they spend a month offering the Tory membership the choice of Boris Johnson, like a dictator with only his own name on the ballot?
I misunderstood how the threshold works. Doesn't apply after round 2. Just straight "bottom man out".

Boris Johnson's Brexit two-facedness is starting to become clear. I imagine the ERG won't be too chuffed!
I also imagine he was hoping this wouldn't surface until after the debate in a few hours time. The other candidates are going to try and get him to nail his Brexit jelly to the mast.

Have you heard of #Hotelling’s Law? In a two party system, it says that you get most votes by minimising the political distance between the parties. It’s worked well in the past, but it’s about to bring an end to both #Labour and the #Tory party. 1/n

Hotelling’s law worked really well for Tony #Blair. #Thatcher had moved the Tory party to the right, so #NewLabour had an opportunity to increase its vote share by also moving rightwards. 2/n
Politics had shifted. Both parties held broadly similar policies. Blair’s political stance, although to the left of Thatcher’s, was much further right than any Labour leader previously (or since). Labour was able to capture ground that the Tories had left unguarded. 3/n

So, where are we today? Overall I would say that the #Labour #Corbyn strategy is working well, and is likely to see Jez in No. 10 at some point in the next year or just over a year.
The #Conservatives are experiencing what looks to me rather like damage ERM crisis did to them in autumn 1992. Have lost 13 points (!) with @YouGov in just six weeks. Bear in mind that experience shows that such falls get worse for some time - could be headed v low.
The moment MV3 failed to pass was a clarifying one, and therefore welcome here - had been wondering for years what was keeping the CON score so high. It was #Brexit. We're now at 50/50 whether it even happens. They will struggle to recover.

A few thoughts on last night's events in Parliament.
1. As Grieve said himself, his amendment does not prevent a no deal (still the legal default), but does make it less likely by allowing Parli step in and tell the gov not to let it happen.
2. As @ThimontJack has said, by making Parli's 2nd vote amendable - the Grieve amendment allows MPs to push the can down the road again, using the first vote to reject the PM's deal, but only having to make substantive suggestions on what they want instead in round 2.
3. As most MPs don't want no deal, Grieve amdt ups stakes for hard Brexiters. If PM's deal is voted down, Parli may push for a softer Brexit or 2nd ref in vote 2. Makes it slightly more likely PM deal passes in vote 1, but less likely MPs would be bounced into 2nd vote on PM deal

1. Worst national leadership in my lifetime forcing through the most damaging, misguided & missold policy I can remember. Ideology & vested self interest replace statesmanship, soundbites replace sound judgement & autocracy subverts democracy.

2. A flawed Leave campaign based on lies, deceit, disingenuity & over simplification & a #Remain one fought w/o any positivity from the Govt & no real commitment from Labour, whose leader was virtually AWOL, did no justice to #Brexit complexity & betrayed our democratic process.
3. A mere 37% of voters/26.5% of the Ppl voted leave in a legally Non-Binding test of public opinion which has been corrupted, on the basis of an illegitimate political promise & interpreted as being the irrefutable Will of the Ppl.
The 1st is insufficient to claim the latter!
